abstract (57) [Problem] To provide a varistor excellent in plating resistance and moisture resistance. SOLUTION: A ceramic sheet 1a is manufactured using a raw material containing zinc oxide as a main component. Next, the ceramic sheets 1a and the internal electrodes 2 were alternately laminated, and cut into a predetermined size so that the internal electrodes 2 were alternately led out to opposing end faces, thereby obtaining a varistor element 1. Next, after the external electrodes 3 are formed on both end surfaces of the varistor element 1, the varistor element 1 is sintered by performing a heat treatment. Thereafter, the varistor element 1 was buried in SiO 2 or a mixture 5 thereof, and heat-treated in air or an oxygen atmosphere to form high resistance layers 4 a and 4 b on the surface of the varistor element 1.
