SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A single element (40) or multi-element (88) plasma discharge electrostatic printer for use in a single-element (200) and multi-element (230, 250) plasma display for use in a plasma display. An electric field controlled plasma discharge display element for a light source is disclosed. The display element is for generating a control electric field (64) near the discharge electric field (58) with a pair of hollow discharge electric field electrodes (42, 46) and located outside and in alignment with the discharge electric field electrodes.
