titleOfInvention Coexisting communication systems
abstract (57) Summary An integrated communication system supporting a plurality of TDMA or TDD communication protocols includes means for selectively communicating according to any of the protocols. Each protocol defines a time frame and / or time slot for another period (901, 911) from which a composite time frame having a predetermined timing structure is obtained. The first base station device (104) communicates in a first set of time slots of a composite time frame according to a first TDMA protocol or a TDD protocol, and is located at the same location as the first base station device. The second base station device (104) communicates in the second set of time slots of the composite time frame according to the second TDMA protocol or the TDD protocol. An electronic device is provided that coordinates (such as a GPS receiver in one or more base station devices) to prevent collisions between communications that occur between each base station device and each of its users. In one particular embodiment, the first protocol is a GSM protocol and the second protocol is a TDD protocol that utilizes spread spectrum technology. The TDD protocol is configured such that each time slot is twice the duration of a GSM time slot and each time frame is four times the duration of a GSM time frame. The system may have many "stacked" base stations in one cell, each operating at a different frequency or using a different spreading code.
