titleOfInvention Preparation of flexible melamine resin
abstract PURPOSE:To prepare the titled resin by reaction of melamine with both formaldehyde and an aliphatic alcohol, then carrying out co-condensation with a sulfonamide followed by incorporating the resulting system with oxyethylene-oxypropylens block copolymer. CONSTITUTION:1 mole of melamine is made to react with (1) 1.8-3.0 moles of formaldehyde and (2) 0.5-1.5 moles of a lower aliphatic alcohol under a PH of 5.7- 6.9 pref. at 70-90 deg.. After that, being increased in the PH value to 0.5-10.0 the resulting system is incorporated with (3) 0.1-0.6 mole of an aromatic sulfonamide to carry out co-condensation at 80-90 deg.C followed by adding (4) 20-50 parts by wt., based or the system just obtained, of oxyethylene-oxypropylene block copolymer of a molecular weight of 3,000-15,000. The mixture thus obtained is agitated, then cooled to make a syrup-like liquid resin. The decorative laminates manufactured from the above liquid resin are greatly improved in secondary processability with keeping their inherent characteristics.
