| abstract | NEW MATERIAL:2-chloro-5-trichloromethylpyridine. n USE: Medicines, pesticides, and dyes, particularly herbicides, and intermediates for selective herbicides killing the true grass weeds without doing substantial damage to broad-leaved crops, e.g. cotton and soybean. n PROCESS: One mole of β-picoline is reacted with 4-8mol of chlorine in the gaseous phase in the presence of 5W15mol of an inert diluent gas comprising an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or helium, a halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or trichloroethylene, preferably nitrogen or carbon tetrachloride or their mixture at 250W550°C, preferably 350W500°C, to give the objective compound.
