titleOfInvention Manufacturing of high-loss optical fiber for photo-attenuator
abstract PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled optical fiber in high productivity, by irradiating an optical fiber with radiation, and then with ultraviolet rays or visible light. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber is irradiated with radiation such as X-ray, beta-ray, gamma-ray, neutron ray, etc., especially gamma-ray from cobalt-60. The irradiation is carried out at a dose of 10<7>-10<8> R for 1hr - 1 week. The irradiation is followed by the irradiation with ultraviolet rays or visible light, preferably ultaviolet rays having a wavelength of especially 200-400nm. The treated fiber may be subjected to the thermal treatment at >=120 deg.C. The optical fiber is colored and its optical absorption is increased by the treatment.
