abstract PURPOSE:To obtain quartz glass without causing cracking during shrinkage due to gelling and in a sintering stage by mixing sol prepd. by hydrolyzing alkoxysilane in the presence of an acidic catalyst with sol prepd. by hydrolyzing alkoxysilane in the presence of a basic catalyst and by converting the mixture into gel. CONSTITUTION:Alkoxysilane is hydrolyzed in the presence of a basic catalyst such as an aqueous soln. of ammonia to prepare sol. Alkoxysilane is hydrolyzed in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as an aqueous soln. of hydrochloric acid to prepare sol. The separately prepd. two kinds of sol are uniformly mixed and converted into gel to obtain quartz glass. By this method large-sized quartz glass can be manufactured without causing cracking during shrinkage due to gelling and in a sintering stage while maintaining high purity.
