abstract PURPOSE:To improve a physical characteristic and electromagnetic conversion characteristic in particular by using a ferromagnetic alloy having a surface area of a specific value or above to maintain the surface roughness having coercive force of a specific value or above at a specific value or below and forming a specific thermosetting back layer on the plastic base having such a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer which contains magnetic alloy powder of Fe-Co, Co-Ni, etc. having >=48m<2>/g specific surface area by a BET method and of which the coercive force is >=1,000Oe and the surface roughness is <=0.08mu is formed on a base by using a thermosetting resin or electron rays curable binder. A thermosetting back layer contg. a compsn. consisting of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyurethane resin and polyisocyanate or a material consisting of such compsn. and nitrocellulose and if necessary added with a conductive inorg. material such as graphite and filler such as SiO2, MoS2 or the like is formed on the rear of said base to 0.05-0.6mu surface roughness. The magnetic recording medium having excellent runnability, etc. suitable for a video tape, etc. is thus obtd.
