titleOfInvention | Production of carbon fiber precursor pitch |
abstract | PURPOSE: To produce the titled pitch which is homogeneous and optically isotropic, by removing mesophase of tar pitch, heat-treating pitch and hydrogenating the formed mesophase pitch. n CONSTITUTION: Soft to medium pitch contained in tar pitch is heat-treated at 350W500°C to form mesophase. An arom. solvent is added thereto, and solvent- insoluble matters contg. mesophase are removed by filtration or decantation. The resulting pitch contg. no free carbon is heat-treated at 350W500°C in an inert gas atmosphere under atomospheric or reduced pressure to obtain mesophase pitch contg. optical anisotropic fraction of 80wt% or above and having a benzene-insoluble matter content of 70wt% or above and a quinoline-insoluble matter content of 20W40wt%. The pitch is hydrogenated to solubilize the quinoline-insoluble matter, to make it wholly optically isotropic and to make the ratio of H/C in the pitch 0.7W1.2. The pitch is then heat-treated at 300W450°C in an inert gas atmosphere under atmospheric or reduced pressure to remove low-molecular components. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio |
