PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by using a catalyst obtained by subjecting zeolite having large control index to ion exchange with Tl, Pb and/or Co ion and condensing an aliphatic aldehyde, ketone or a mixture thereof with ammonia. n CONSTITUTION: A catalyst obtained by subjecting zeolite which has a ratio of Si to Al in zeolite of about 12W1,000, especially about 15W500 and a control index of about 0.8W about 12 to ion exchange with thallium, lead and/or cobalt ion is used as a catalyst and an aliphatic aldehyde (e.g., acetaldehyde, acrolein etc.,), ketone (e.g., acetone, etc.,) or a mixture thereof is condensed with ammonia in a gaseous phase to give a pyridine base (e.g., α-picoline, β-picoline, 2,4,6- collidone, etc.).
