abstract PURPOSE: To suppress the formation of carbon oxide and produce a hydrocarbon in good selectivity, by carrying out the oxidative coupling reaction of methane with molecular oxygen in the presence of lead oxide supported on a basic carrier as a catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Methane is subjected to oxidative coupling reaction with molecular oxygen to synthesize a ≥2C hydrocarbon. In the process, lead oxide supported on a basic carrier, e.g. composition consisting essentially of MgO or β-Al 2 O 3 , is used as a catalyst to carry out the reaction at 650W1,000°C, preferably 750W900°C. The molar ratio of the methane to the molecular oxygen is preferably ≥10, particularly ≥20.
