titleOfInvention Production of carbon precursor composed of thermosetting resin prepared from hydrogenated pitch
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the title precursor which has a high carbonization yield and a low shrinkage factor during carbonization and allows graphatization to be freely controlled, by hydrogenating pitch to lower its softening point, adding a specified crosslinking agent thereto and heating the mixture in the presence of an acid catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: At least one pitch having a solftening point of not lower than 120°C selected from the group consisting of petroleum and coal pitches is hydrogenated to lower the softening point. A crosslinking agent mainly composed of an arom. compd. having at least two hydroxymethyl and/or halomethyl groups is added thereto. The mixture is heated in the presence of an acid catalyst at 60W300°C to obtain the desired carbon precursor. The pitch used has a carbonization yield of not lower than 50wt%. It is desirable that the pitch having a low softening point and a high carbonization yield is used as a starting material. It is preferred that the hydrogenation is carried out by a direct hydrogenation method wherein the hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of a catalyst in a hydrogen stream at a high temp. under a high pressure. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
