abstract PURPOSE: To provide the titled pitch containing mesophase pitch and a specific light isotropic pitch at a specific ratio, having improved fluidity and stringiness, spinnable over a long period without causing end breakage and giving a carbon fiber having uniform quality and high strength and elastic modulus. n CONSTITUTION: The objective pitch is composed of (A) 80W99.5wt.% mesophase pitch produced by heat-treating raw pitch under reduced pressure while distilling out light-oil component and (B) 0.5W20wt.% light isotropic pitch having a softening point of 80W250°C, preferably 100W200°C, a number-average molecular weight of 100W500, preferably 200W400 and an aromatic carbon fraction of ≥0.5, preferably ≥0.7. The isotropic pitch of the component B is preferably the light-oil component distilling out in the heat-treatment of the raw pitch under reduced pressure or a material produced by the heat-treatment of said light-oil component. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
