abstract Disclosed are an optical pickup apparatus for performing a reading or writing operation of information on one of a different kind of optical information recording medium each having a different thickness of transparent substrate. The optical pickup apparatus includes a laser beam generator and a light converging optical system for converging the light beam from the laser beam generator on the information recording surface of the optical information recording medium through the transparent substrate. In the optical pickup apparatus, the light converging optical system includes an objective lens and divides the light beam from the laser beam generator into two or more regions in a direction parallel to the optical axis. The other type of optical information recording medium includes a first optical information recording medium having a transparent substrate having a thickness t1, and a second optical information recording medium having a transparent substrate having a thickness t2, wherein the second optical information recording medium The magnification m2 of the objective lens seen from is smaller than the magnification m1 of the objective lens seen from the first optical information recording medium side.
