titleOfInvention | Liquid crystal element and its manufacturing method |
abstract | The liquid crystal element is formed by one layer of liquid crystal material surrounded by two cell walls which have electrodes and one or both of which have been processed to align the molecules of the liquid crystal material. Most alignment treatments impart surface pretilt and alignment with strong azimuth and zenith angle anchoring energies to the liquid crystal molecules in contact. The present invention allows liquid crystal molecules to move in or near the cell wall to reduce one or more of azimuth, zenith angle or translational anchoring energy to improve switching properties and optical performance. The reduction in anchoring energy can be obtained by oligomers or short chain polymers distributed on the surface or added to the liquid crystal material. The size of the oligomers or short chain polymers is small enough that little phase separation occurs from the liquid crystal material. The polymer layer has incomplete solubility in the liquid crystal material used in the device, has a physical affinity for the substrate surface, and is characterized by maintaining a substantially liquid-like surface at the polymer / liquid crystal interface. The polymer may be formed by polymerizing a reactive low molecular weight material in a solution in a liquid crystal fluid. Subsequently, the dispersion or solution of the polymer in the resulting liquid crystal is filled into the cell and the neutral is coated on the substrate surface.n n n n Liquid crystal element, zenith angle, azimuth, anchoring, bistable, monostable, nematic, smectic, pretilt. |
