abstract MPEG encoding interlaced high definition video streams are decoded and converted to low resolution by an MPEG decoder with a reduced amount of reference picture memory. The receive frame and field DCT coding block is first down-converted into a reconstructed pixel field block through conversion of the receive frame DCT coding block into a transform field DCT coding block. Vertical IDCT and horizontal IDCT are then performed in the receive field DCT coding block and the transform field DCT coding block to generate appropriate redundancy and pixel field blocks. The vertical IDCT is an N point horizontal IDCT, and the horizontal IDCT is an M point horizontal IDCT, where N corresponds to the original block size and N> M. Redundant and pixel field blocks are spatially filtered and downsampled vertically. IDCT, filtering, and downsampling operations are effectively combined by a single linear operator.
