abstract An ultra low phase noise oscillation method and apparatus for lowering phase noise of an electronic signal source are presented. According to one embodiment, a mode locked laser using nonlinear polarization rotation is used to generate a laser light pulse, and detect a phase difference between an external voltage controlled oscillator and the generated laser light pulse. Thereafter, the detected phase difference signal is fed back to the external voltage controlled oscillator so that the phase noise of the external voltage controlled oscillator follows an optical pulse having an ultra low phase noise.
