titleOfInvention | Selective removal and recovery of sulfur dioxide from effluent gases using organic phosphorous solvents |
abstract | A method for selective removal and recovery of sulfur dioxide from effluent gas is disclosed. Sulfur dioxide is recovered in the sulfur dioxide absorption / desorption cycle utilizing a liquid solvent to selectively absorb sulfur dioxide from the effluent gas. Liquid solvents include organic phosphite compounds selected from phosphate triesters, phosphonate diesters, phosphinate monoesters and mixtures thereof. Preferably the liquid solvent comprises a phosphonate diester of formula (I) wherein R 1 , R 2 R 3 are independently aryl or C 1 to C 8 alkyl. The organic phosphonate diester is substantially immiscible with water and the water solubility in the organic phosphonate diester is less than about 10 weight at 25 ° C. and has a water vapor pressure of less than about 1 Pa at 50 ° C. According to a preferred embodiment, the liquid solvent comprises dibutyl butyl phosphonate. The absorbed sulfur dioxide is continuously stripped to regenerate the organic phosphonate solvent and produce a concentrated gas in the sulfur dioxide content. Sulfur dioxide-enriched gas may be used as part of the feed gas in a contact sulfuric acid apparatus or a Klaus apparatus for producing elemental sulfur or may be cooled to condense sulfur dioxide in the form of a liquid product. The invention is particularly advantageous for producing sulfur dioxide-rich gases from relatively weak gases in sulfur dioxide content. |
