titleOfInvention Active magnetic bearing system for improved servo control
abstract Apparatus and method for controlling the position of the head 120 in the disc drive 100, the head being supported by the rotary actuator 110 and floated by the active magnetic bearing assembly 112. The servo control circuit 166 applies a current to the actuator coil 113 for rotating the actuator, and the active magnetic bearing control circuit 168 applies a current to the bearing coil 208 which floats the actuator. When external disturbance is applied to the actuator, the active magnetic bearing control circuit applies a bearing shift (BT) signal to the servo control circuit to adjust the current applied to the actuator coil to compensate for the disturbance. When the servo control circuit initiates a search operation, a search expectation (SE) signal is provided to the active magnetic bearing control circuit to regulate the current in the bearing coil to compensate for the torque force on the actuator.
