PURPOSE: An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to prevent frost breaking of a plate type heat exchanger while operating as an evaporator. CONSTITUTION: An air-conditioner comprises: a compressor(10) which compresses refrigerant; a plate type heat exchanger(30) which heat-exchanges the refrigerant and hot water; a temperature sensor which senses the temperature of the refrigerant which flows in into the plate type heat exchanger; and a controller which controls the operation of the compressor by comparing the detected temperature of the refrigerant by the temperature sensor and a reference temperature which comprises a first reference temperature and a second reference temperature. The controller reduces the operation ratio of the compressor if the detected temperature of the refrigerant is lower than the first reference temperature and stops the operation if the detected temperature of the refrigerant is lower than the second reference temperature. |
