titleOfInvention | Fuel subassemblies and fuel elements for fuel assemblies consisting of reactor (substitute), driver-bleeding modules for nuclear reactor (substitute) |
abstract | The present invention relates to the design of light reactors in which thorium is used as fuel, and more particularly to the design of jacketless fuel assemblies, which constitute the cores of pressurized water reactors (PWRs), such as the VVER-1000. Reactor cores, including the seed and blanket subassemblies that make up fuel assemblies, are used to combust thorium raw materials with conventional reactor fuels, including non-diffuse enriched uranium and inorganic and reactor-grade plutonium. In the first embodiment, the reactor core is completely " non-proliferative: because neither the reactor fuel nor the waste generated can be used to produce nuclear weapons. In a second embodiment of the present invention, the reactor core is associated with a large amount of thorium. It is used to burn inorganic grade plutonium and provides a suitable means for removing the stockpile of inorganic grade plutonium and converting the emitted energy into electric power The cores in both embodiments of the present invention are centered by annular blanket regions. It consists of a set of seed-blanket assemblies, having seed regions, wherein the seed regions comprise uranium or plutonium fuel rods, while the blanket regions comprise thorium fuel rods, the volume ratio of the moderator and fuel and the seed and blanket regions Relative size allows any of the embodiments of the present invention to be used for the production of nuclear weapons. In addition, a new refueling system is used for the first embodiment of the present invention in order to maximize the regeneration of the seed fuel, which system also uses the nuclear fuel used. Ensure that it cannot be used to produce nuclear weapons. |
