Method and apparatus for ophthalmic devices including gradient-indexed and shaped liquid crystal layers |
abstract |
The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for providing a variable optical insert in an ophthalmic lens. The variable optical insert may have a surface within it having a different radius of curvature. The liquid crystal layer can be used to provide a variable optical function, and in some embodiments, the alignment layer for the liquid crystal layer can be patterned in a radially dependent manner. The patterning may allow the refractive index of the optical device to change in a gradient-refractive-index or GRIN manner. The energy source may supply power to the variable optical insert contained within the ophthalmic lens. In some embodiments, the ophthalmic lens is cast from a silicone hydrogel. Various ophthalmic lens entities may include an electroactive liquid crystal layer for electrically controlling optical properties. |
