titleOfInvention IMPROVEMENTS IN MELTED GLASS WITH OXIDATION CONTROL AND DECREASED EMISSIONS
abstract The present invention relates to improvements to a method of making glass, to control the final valency state of multivalent ions contained in glass, comprising: melting glass fillers containing a multivalent ion fort and a refining agent in an upstream zone in which the redox conditions in the melted glass remain relatively oxidizing as measured by the ratio of ferrous iron to total iron, whereby the filler material is substantially liquefied while preventing undue premature disassociation of the refining agent and the presence of a refining agent is ensured in the melted glass entering a downstream refining zone to provide adequate refinement; in a downstream zone introduce a reducing agent evenly through the melt to alter redox conditions to be more reducing as measured by an increase in the ratio of ferrous iron to total iron of at least twenty percent compared to the ratio in the upstream zone, thereby reducing the solubility of the refining agent in the melt to induce dissociation of the refining agent to aid in refinement, and thereby control the final valency state of the multivalent ions in the product of glass by inducing a higher proportion of multivalent ions that will be present in their lowest valence state.
