Methods are provided for fertilizing the soil and for increasing crop yield, plant growth, and seed germination rate with melanin or a melanin precursor, derivative or analog; The methods described herein require water, melanin, or a melanin precursor, derivative or analog, and a source of electromagnetic energy, such as visible or invisible light energy, to catalyze the electrolysis of water; electrolysis of water causes the release of diatomic hydrogen into the soil, resulting in fertilization of the soil; Fertilized soil compositions are also provided. |
