abstract Hydrocarbon emissions from fuel tanks, particularly those associated with motor vehicles, are reduced by contacting a stream of hydrocarbon fuel vapor, which dries to the atmosphere, from the tanks, with a polymeric adsorbent, derived from a macroporous or macroreticular copolymer of at least one aromatic monovinylidene monomer and one bridging monomer. The macroporous copolymers are converted to suitable adsorbents by subsequent polymerization, entangling it in the swollen state, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The resulting adsorbent has improved hydrocarbon adsorption capacity, compared to conventional activated carbon adsorbents.
