abstract A method for producing kraft wood fibers having an alpha-cellulose content greater than 97% and a viscosity greater than 40 centipoise is described. The method involves previously hydrolyzing hardwood chips with water, cooking the kraft, bleaching and caustic treatment. The resulting pulp can be converted to carboxymethyl cellulose superabsorbent having improved properties, particularly a high "absorbency under load".
