abstract | 1,193,904. Polymer metal complexes. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 24 May, 1968 [25 May, 1967], No. 24837/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division G2] A polymer-metal complex is formed by contacting a polymer system containing nitrile groups and groups capable of forming the anions -OSO- 2 , -OSO- 3 or -OPO<SP>2-</SP> 3 in ionizing media. both groups being attached to macromolecular main chains, with silver or copper cations. The ionizing media may be water. The groups may be borne by the same or different macromolecules. The polymer system is preferably a copolymer of acrylonitrile with vinyl sulphonic acid, styrene sulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt of one of these acids. The complex metal cation may be reduced thus forming a dispersion of the free metal in the copolymer. The free metal may be reconstituted by contacting the copolymer with silver or cuprous cations. The copolymer complex containing silver cations may be treated with a halide solution, and this polymer system containing dispersed silver halide may be contacted with silver or cuprous cations. In the examples, acrylonitrile, sodium vinyl sulphonate and optionally ethylene glycol bis-methacrylate or acrylamide, are co-polymerized using a catalyst comprising potassium pyrosulphite and ammonium persulphate with a copper sulphate activator. The polymer is formed into a membrane layer or filament which is treated with silver nitrate or acetate solutions or a solution containing cuprous ions. In other examples silver nitrate is added to polyethylene- or polystyrene-sulphonic acid and this is mixed with polyacrylonitrile; alternatively the two polymers are mixed and together added to a silver nitrate solution. In, a further example, a nitric acid solution of polyacryonitrile is treated with silver nitrate and then reacted with an acrylonitrile-ethylenesulphonic acid copolymer. |
