A process for preparing a 1-(3-cyclopentyloxy-4-alkoxyphenyl)-4-oxocyclohexane carbonitrile of formula (I) comprises the cyclization of a 4-cyano-(3-cyclopentyloxy-4-alkoxyphenyl)-heptane diacid dialkyl ester of formula (II) in the presence of a base to a 5-cyano-(3-cyclopentyloxy-4-alkoxyphenyl)-oxocyclohexane carboxylic acid alkyl ester of formula (III), followed by the neutralization of this compound of formula (III) with an alkali metal hydrogen carbonate and then decarboxylation in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate to give a compound of formula (I) wherein R1 to R3 are independently alkyl. |
