A method of inhibiting an ethylene response in a plant involving applying to the plant an effective ethylene response-inhibiting amount of a compound of Formula I, where n is a number from 1 to 4, and each R is independently a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched-chain, unsubstituted or substituted, C6-C20 alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl. It also involves a method of applying of a compound of Formula II to achieve an effective response inhibiting ethylene as described above. In Formula II, n is a number from 1 to 4, and each R is independently a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched-chain, unsubstituted or substituted , C5 alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl. Also it is a method using either Formula I or II to inhibit the ripening of picked fruit and vegetables, prolonging life of cut flowers, and causing abscission inhibition in a plant. |
