abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a core that is economically advantageous during the first operating cycle of a light-water reactor. SOLUTION: The first reactor core of a light-water reactor, during the first operating cycle, consists of a plurality of fuel assemblies, each of which has a plurality of fuel rods, each of which has a clad pipe surrounding a column of fuel, with the fuel of at least one of the fuel rods containing a combustible neutron absorber. At the start of the first operating cycle of the reactor core, the combustible neutron absorber is made of enriched gadolinium. The gadolinium is enriched with respect to one or more isotopes having a greater neutron- absorption cross-sectional area than natural gadolinium.
