titleOfInvention | WAY FORMING AND VOLCING A VULLABLE MATERIAL BY EXTENSION THROUGH A ZONE WHERE A MOLDING AGENT IS APPLIED TO THE SURFACE OF THE EXTENSIONED PRODUCT |
abstract | 1380942 Extruding vulcanized material MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 23 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970 26 June 1971] 60017/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] A rubber material, e.g. polyisoprene or a diene rubber, or a synthetic resin material, e.g. polyethylene, containing a vulcanizing organic peroxide, is shaped as a copper electrical conductor covering, or as a tube, and vulcanized during passage through an elongate extrusion die, with the admission to the die surface of a lubricant having viscosity, absorption into the material, and gelling parameters within stated ranges as determined by specified tests. Numerous lubricants are specified, and the material may comprise various stated polymers, with examples being given of the extrusion of vulcanizable polyethylene coverings on to copper conductors precoated with a semiconducting vulcanizable polyethylene. In the covering of an electrical conductor w, the covering R is formed in an upstream portion 31 of the die, e.g. of less than 1 m. length, with the lubricant admitted under pressure from an annular chamber 42 through an annular porous die wall 41 upstream of, and optionally at other locations sequentially along, an elongate die vulcanizing portion, e.g. of 1 to 20 m. length, comprising a number of bolted together die sections 32, 33, upstream of a cooling section 5 through which the extrusion passes in contact with cooling water circulated under pressure. The die may comprise iron, brass, copper, or aluminium, and the vulcanizing section thereof may be heated by an electrical band heater 6, by a surrounding hot oil jacket, by passage of electric current through the die wall, or by induction heating, and the cooling section 5 is mounted for movement, e.g. on wheels, to permit thermal expansion and facilitate the addition and removal of die sections. A covering of polyethylene not containing vulcanizing agent may be applied to the vulcanizable covering intermediate the zones in which it is formed and vulcanized, to prevent direct contact thereof with the lubricant. In the extrusion of a tube Fig. 2 (not shown), the forming within the die is effected around a mandrel heated, e.g. by an internal electrical cartridge heater and similarly supplied with lubricant, and which may either extend only up to the entrance of the cooling zone, or may extend therethrough to support the tube. |
