abstract | 1491373 Fuel elements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 13 Jan 1975 [11 Feb 1974] 1337/75 Heading G6C A fuel element comprises a metallic elongated container 17 in the form of a right circular cylinder, a layer 22 of high lubricity material, e.g. graphite or molybdenum disulphite, disposed in and adjacent to the container 17, a low neutron capture cross-section metal liner 21, e.g. of Zr, Zr alloy, Nb or Nb alloy, adjacent to the layer 22, a core 16 of fuel material, e.g. UO 2 or a UO 2 /PuO 2 mixture, and plugs (not shown) scaling the ends of the container 17. The container 17 is preferably formed of Zircaloy-2. The liner 21 serves as a preferential reaction site for volatile impurities and fission products and protects the container 17 from contact and reaction with such impurities and fission products. The layer 22 of high lubricity material acts as an interface between the liner 21 and the container 17 and reduces localized stresses on the container due to fuel expansion and cracking of the fuel. The layer 22 can be in the form of a coating on the outer surface of the liner 21 or the inner surface of the container 17, or a hollow cylinder disposed between the liner and the container. In the latter case, it can be in the form of a hollow cylindrical foil or a foil wrapped to form a hollow cylinder and be capable of being inserted inside the container 17 prior to the insertion of the fuel core 16. |
