titleOfInvention | PROCEDURE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A MINERAL WOOL PRODUCT, WHICH CAN BE MOISTURED WITH WATER |
abstract | 1336426 Bonded webs ROCKWOOL AS 24 Nov 1970 [25 Nov 1969] 57664/69 Heading D1R [Also in Division C1] A water-wettable porous mineral wool bonded mat is prepared by spraying aqueous solutions of binder and of wetting agent, or a combined solution, onto 1-10 micron fibres freshly formed from an extruded melt as they are carried by a current of air to a pervious conveyor. The mat is compressed then cured at 200‹C to produce a mat of density 80-200 kg/m<SP>3</SP> and thickness 1-5cm. The binder is phenol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde. The wetting agent is lauryl alcohol or an alkylaryl polyglycol ether and comprises 0.1% and 2% by weight of the mineral fibres. The product transports water by capillary action. It may be used as a cultivation medium for germination of seedlings and propagation of cuttings, as a growth medium for soilless growth of plants in containers, as a filtering medium and, in granulated form as a soil conditioner. |
