This invention provides a water-soluble azo compound represented by the following formula (1) (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having a number of carbon alums of 1 to 4, an alkoxy group or a sulfo group having a number of carbon atoms of 1 to 4, n, m, x and y respectively represents an intega of 1 or 2, 1 to 3, 2 to 4, and 1 to 3) and salt thereof, and an ink composition containing such compound or salt. This compound or salt thereof exhibits a color phase having an excellent brightness and is suited for use in ink-jet recording. Furthermore, the recorded article has high strength in various aspects. This compound or salt thereof is useful as an yellow coloring agent which exhibits an excellent storage stability when it is used for preparing an ink composition, and therefore it is most suited for use as an ink composition, in particular as an ink jet recording ink. |
