titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for an ophthalmic device comprising a gradient refractive index liquid crystal layer and a shaped dielectric layer |
abstract | Methods and apparatus for providing a variable optical insert in an ophthalmic lens are disclosed. A liquid crystal layer can be used to provide a variable optical function, and in some embodiments, an alignment layer of the liquid crystal layer can be patterned in a radially dependent manner. Patterning may allow the refractive index of the optical device to vary in a gradient index mode or a GRIN mode. At least one first layer of dielectric material, which may have a thickness variation, at least over the optical zone of the device, may assist in defining an electric field across one of the liquid crystal layers. An energy source is capable of powering the variable optical insert contained within the ophthalmic lens. In some embodiments, the ophthalmic lens is cast molded from a polyoxyhydrogel. Various ophthalmic lens entities can include an electroactive liquid crystal layer to electrically control optical properties. |
