abstract A system includes sensors deployed along a vehicle pathway to detect the presence of a plurality of vehicles. An embodiment of a method for detecting speed may include generating from the sensors presence data of each of the plurality of vehicles and transmitting the detected presence data to a base station. The transmitting may include transmitting the detected presence data from the sensors to an access point and transmitting the detected presence data from the access point to the base station. The base station determines a speed of each of the plurality of vehicles. The speed may be determined at a periodic interval responsive to a predetermined distance between the sensors and a difference in the detection time of each of the plurality of vehicles at each of the sensors.
