abstract The image data compression apparatus includes a reversible compression section that applies reversible compression processing to to-be-compressed data made of a series of numeric values; an irreversible compression section that applies irreversible compression processing to to-be-compressed data made of a series of numeric values; and a compression control section that causes, if a difference between a maximum value and a minimum value in plural pixel values representing plural pixels forming an image is within a range from a predetermined upper limit to a predetermined lower limit, the irreversible compression section to execute the irreversible compression processing for the plural pixel values as the to-be-compressed data, and that causes, if the difference is out of the range, the reversible compression section to execute the reversible compression processing for the plural pixel values as the to-be-compressed data.
