titleOfInvention | Electrothermal furnace control |
abstract | Apparatus for controlling the operation of a furnace having an electrically energizable fuel valve, which, when energized, supplies fuel to the furnace burner. An ignition circuit generates recurrent sparking, when energized, upon the demand of a thermostat, and ceases to regenerate sparking after ignition of the fuel. A triggerable semiconductor current-switching device is interconnected with the fuel valve. Upon generation of sparking by the ignition circuit the device is triggered and this initially energizes the valve. Means is included for maintaining energization of the fuel valve following initial energization thereof by the switching device. A power circuit supplies power to the switching device and the fuel valve when the thermostat demands heat. A thermistor is connected for causing interruption of this supply of power if the thermistor is heated above a predetermined threshold temperature. Means for heating the thermistor is interconnected with the ignition circuit to cause heating of the thermistor when sparking is generated. Upon heating, the thermistor requires a predetermined heating time interval to reach the threshold temperature and thus, if the fuel is not ignited in the predetermined interval, the supply of power to the fuel valve is interrupted, thereby shutting off the supply of fuel to the burner. |
