titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of copper cyanide |
abstract | Copper cyanide (CuCN) is produced from copper metal and hydrogen cyanide wherein the copper is reacted with cupric chloride to form cuprous chloride in an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride and hydrochloric acid. The cuprous chloride is reacted with hydrogen cyanide to form cuprous cyanide and hydrochloric acid. The insoluble cuprous cyanide is separated from the solution. The cuprous chloride in the remaining portion of solution is oxidized to cupric chloride by the action of air or oxygen, and the hydrochloric acid which is then reacted with more copper. |
