abstract A device for providing a moving display having an electroluminescent phosphor layer arranged to emit a band of light when alternating current voltages of different amplitudes are applied across the phosphor layer. A layer having a plurality of electrodes separated by transparent resistive material is positioned at one side of the phosphor layer and a common electrode layer is positioned at the opposite side of the phosphor layer. The voltages are applied to the electrodes and to the common electrode layer and the amplitudes of the voltages are changed sequentially to cause the band of light to move in a direction and at a speed in accordance with the sequence and rate of change in the amplitudes of the voltages.
