THE INVENTION PROVIDES NOVEL A-METHYLOL-BENZOIN-SULPHONIC ACID ESTERS WHICH MAY BE MANUFACTURED BY REACTINGG EQUIVALENT AMOUNTS OF AN A-HYDROXY-METHYLBENZOIN AND A SULPHONIC ACID ESTER CHLORIDE IN THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROGEN CHLORIDE BINDING AGENT. THE NOVEL COMPOUNDS DECOMPOSE ON IRRADIATION WITH UV LIGHT UNDER LIBERATION OF THE CORRESPONDING SULPHONIC ACID. THEREFORE, THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR USE AS CIRING CATALYSTS WHICH CAN BE ACTIVATED BY UV-RAYS FOR ACID-CURABLE RESINS OR RESIN COMPOSITIONS. |
