abstract A method and apparatus for classifying biological cells wherein a cell is passed through a plurality of monochromatic beams of light generated by splitting a laser beam. The light may be absorbed or scattered by the cell or it may excite the cell to emit fluorescent light. The absorption scatter or fluorescence is detected and a signature for the cell is provided for classifying the cells and detecting abnormalities therein which are characterized by the detected response.
