abstract An endoscope is described, in which a shaft is included with inner and outer sheath pipes ( 1, 2 ) multiple illumination units ( 10 ) with LED's ( 25 ) provided for producing illumination light cascade-like, axially sequentially. The illumination units ( 10 ) consist of light transmissive carriers, upon which the LED's ( 25 ) are bonded. The light produced by the sequentially arranged illumination units ( 10 ) is emitted at the distal end with a high intensity of illumination, preferably after reflection from a mirror ( 11 ) provided at the proximal end.
