Orthoses with microprocessor control (232) placed around the joint of a patient (102) are used to perform, and to monitor isometric, range of motion, proprioception, and isotonic exercises of the joint. An orthosis may comprise first, a second body support portions (104) (106) connected by a hinge (110), a resistance applicator (300) to resist relative movement between the body support portions, a strain or position sensor (230) (744) for sensing the strain applied to or the relative position of the orthosis, digital microprocessor based controller (232) permitting programming, monitoring, and evaluation of exercises to provide a comprehensive program for the rehabilitation of an injured or weakened joint. |
