abstract |
The invention is an operating system for a fuel cell power plant (10) that includes at least one fuel cell (12) for producing electrical energy from a reducing fluid and an oxidant fluid, and fuel processing components including a reformer (52) and a burner (40) for processing a hydrocarbon fuel into the reducing fluid, and a direct mass and heat transfer device (92) in fluid communication with both a process oxidant stream (90) and a plant exhaust passage (80), so that the device directly transfers mass such as water exiting the plant in a plant exhaust stream back into the plant. The invention also includes a split oxidant passage (48) that directs a reformer feed portion of the process oxidant stream into fluid communication with the fuel processing components, and also directs an exhaust portion of the process oxidant stream into the exhaust passage. The system may also include an anode exhaust passage (42) that directs an anode exhaust from the fuel cell into the burner. |
