The present invention provides a transparent electroluminescent device (30) having an optical interference member (50) which reduces the overall reflectance from the device. The optical interference member (50) is formed on a substrate (70), typically comprising a reflective layer (66), a transparent layer (62), a semi-transparent layer (58) and an anti-reflective coating (54). The optical interference member (50) can then be affixed behind the electroluminescent display (31) with a transparent rear electrode (38). When affixed, the optical interference member (50) can reduce reflectance from ambient light and serve as a passivation layer that protects the elements of the electroluminescent device (31) from exposure to external elements. The optical interference member (50) can increase the reflectance of infra-red ambient light, compared to absorbing films, to thus reduce the overall heating of the display. Furthermore, the optical interference member (50) can absorb light emitted towards the back of the display from the electroluminescent layer (31), thus reducing pixel blooming and improving the overall characteristics of the device. In an other embodiment of the invention, the passivation layer can be added without the optical interference layer. |
