abstract In a general aspect, a radiation source includes a quasi-phase matched ferroelectric fluoride crystal to produce wavelengths shorter than 170 nm. In particular, ferroelectric crystals of the formula (I): BaXF4 where X is a divalent transition metal, such as Mg and Zn, unexpectedly exhibit high levels of optical transmission into the ultra-violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
