A silicon carbide based porous article, characterized in that it is a porous material comprising silicon carbide particles as an aggregate and metallic silicon and having a phase containing oxygen on the surface of or around said silicon carbide particles and/or said metallic silicon. The silicon carbide based porous article can be produced at a low cost at a relatively low firing temperature although it contains refractory particles such as silicon carbide particles, exhibits a high thermal conductivity, and is excellent in the resistance to oxidation, to the reaction of particulates and to thermal shock. |
