This invention provides an electrode for a lithium rechargeable battery comprising a sheet-shaped current collector and an active material layer supported on the current collector, wherein the active material layer comprises a plurality of columnar particles having at least one bend which can occlude and release lithium. There is also provided a process for producing an electrode for a lithium rechargeable battery, comprising a first step of allowing active material particles to enter into a sheet-shaped current collector at a first incident angle of +10º to +60º to deposit the active material and a second step of allowing active material particles to enter into the sheet-shaped current collector at a second incident angle of -10º to -60º to deposit the active material. According to the above constitution, the stress which the columnar particles undergo by the expansion and shrinkage of the active material layer can be dispersed in the bend. Further, as viewed from a direction normal to a counter electrode, an exposed part in the current collector constituting the electrode can be significantly reduced. As a result, the amount of lithium, which is supplied from the counter electrode during charging, precipitated in the exposed part in the current collector can be reduced. |
