Disclosed are a novel tris(formylphenol) represented by the general formula shown below and a polynuclear phenol derived from the tris(formylphenol), each of which is useful as a raw material for a heat-resistant material, a raw material for a photosensitive resist composition, an epoxy resin raw material, a curing agent, a color-developing agent for a heat-sensitive recording material, an anti-discoloring agent, a bactericidal agent, a fungicidal agent, an antioxidant agent and the like. Wherein Y represents a hydrogen atom or a group -R2COOR3; R2 represents a monocyclic orcondensed ring aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 15 carbon atoms or an aliphatic hydrocarbon having 1 to 8 carbon atoms which may have a monocyclic or condensed ring aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 15 carbon atoms in the carbon backbone; R3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R1's independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an alkoxy group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; RB and RC may be the same as or different from each other, and RA, RB and RC independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and n and m independently represent an integer ranging from 1 to 3. |
